In the past few years there has been an explosion in the number and quality of consumer electronics available for purchase. As well, the lifespan of most consumer electronics is shrinking to just a few years. Gone are they days when a new tech device could be expected to last upwards of five years. Even for those individuals that would not consider themselves to be ‘tech savvy’, a minimum level of ability with consumer electronics has become standard in our society. It is almost impossible to find someone who does not have a cell phone of their own and that is not familiar with the extra features that are released almost monthly. People rarely see these tech toys as luxuries anymore. Apart from cell phones, several other consumer electronics can be expected in any home, including iPods, laptops, and DVD burners.
Many of the most recent technological releases do not involve new consumer electronics, but rather a combination of old ones. Almost all new cell phones come equipped with a built in camera, and even the newest iPods boast that feature as well. It is only a matter of time until one consumer electronic device will be able to plan your day, take your pictures, send your email, and make your morning cup of coffee! Another recent change involving consumer electronics is the way in which they can be purchased. Due to the high amount of standardization in these products, consumers no longer have to test out something before they purchase it. Many people feel completely comfortable searching for the latest consumer electronics on the internet, and ordering it based on a list of features and an online photo. As more and more people start buying consumer electronics online, the need for superstores like Future Shop and Best Buy will rapidly decrease, giving more and more power to the buyer.
