Play Station

Play Station has been in intense competition with Xbox for several years. While Play Station had the first mover advantage in this marketplace (at least between the remaining players), Microsoft was able to catch up thanks to their strong position in the computing world. Now Play Station and Xbox periodically trade the title of ‘industry leader’ back and forth every few months, whenever a new feature or game is released. This is probably a frustrating endeavor for Play Station, as they are forced to spend millions on marketing and development for an edge that only lasts for a month or two.

For Play Station users, this competition is great news. It ensures that consumers are constantly being bombarded with cool new features, like online gaming, and an endless sea of new games. While video game manufacturers used to focus on young children, Play Station and Xbox now cater a lot of their products to grown men. With new games that are given a rating unsuitable for children, Play Station has effectively expanded the potential market for their products. Furthermore, the older audience has more disposable income than children to spend on fancy new Play Station products. It remains to be seen what new features will be introduced by Play Station and their competitors. But the anticipation among consumers for the next big release from Play Station is almost always present.
